New entrance gates for Grosvenor Museum, Chester

New gates and arch for Grosvenor Museum's side entrance were commissioned in 2000. The side entrance was enhanced to permit access for disabled visitors. (This photograph was taken prior to the completion of the tops of the adjacent walls).

The roundels (below) on the gates depict themes of local significance. The running boar was the emblem of the Roman Legion that was stationed at Chester. The Talbot (hound) is taken from the coat of arms of the Duke of Westminster who lives nearby. The Wheatsheaf appears on the City of Chester coat of arms. The woven cross appears on the coat of arms of the Tollemache family.
